Arkleton Trust Fellowship Applications

Introduction

The Arkleton Trust has a long history of supporting national and international approaches to rural development policy and practice and encouraging the sharing of experience and knowledge gained, with particular emphasis on assisting and promoting rural development in the poorer and developing countries around the world.  It has done this through a range of mechanisms, including publications, seminars, study tours and fellowships.

Over the years, it has found that one of the most effective ways of transferring knowledge and expertise has been through study tours and exchanges between countries by groups and individuals.  These often involve or are facilitated by governments, NGOs, universities and other establishments, but may also include less formal arrangements.

The Arkleton Trust has, therefore, decided to focus its funding in the future to support study tours, visits and exchanges which help facilitate valuable knowledge exchanges.

Outline proposal

In order to support such initiatives, the Trust believes that, initially, its support might best be aimed at enabling organisations to develop ideas and proposals for study tours and exchanges (i.e. a predevelopment stage), although it would not rule out funding for visits, where these have already been developed.  In particular, the Trust wishes to facilitate learning and rural development in the developing world, particularly Africa, and will, therefore, give priority to applications that seek to address this priority.

Whilst the Trust would welcome the involvement of universities and governments in proposed visits, it is not intended that support would be made available simply for intergovernmental or inter-university exchanges.  Any proposals would need to demonstrate how rural development practitioners and other actors in the rural development field would be involved and the potential benefits to them.

Applications may be submitted at any time during the year, but will be considered by trustees at six-monthly meetings.  Outline proposals, as well as detailed applications, will also be considered.

The Trust has only limited funds available, but has decided not to set limits for funding within its limited funds.  It is willing to make small sums available for the predevelopment stage, to enable proposals and practical arrangements to be worked up.  It will then provide more significant funding for the implementation stage i.e. the study tours and exchanges, though it is not expected that the Trust would be the main contributor.  It will be looking for applications that demonstrate partnership and commitment from others.

Outputs

The Trust is keen to see practical outputs from its funding, rather than more detailed research reports.  Where practical, it would like to be actively involved in helping to develop the study tours and exchanges and, from time to time, members of the Trust, may participate in the study trips, and will help to develop linkages and networks.

Successful applicants will be expected to provide regular updates, as their proposals progress, and to submit a final case study / report of the study tour/exchange; participants reflections on the event, what they have learnt and can apply at ‘home’; and future expectations of how the learning can be applied after the tour / exchange.

What we have funded to date

As examples of what we have funded to date please look at the following case studies which have formed part of the ongoing and final reports from current funding:

  • India and Ethiopia - a study trip between Jatan Sansthan (a grassroots Non Governmental Organisation based in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India) and the Southern Region Offices of the Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia.
  • Gunjur – The Gambia - a project for community development in Gunjur (The Gambia) through young people in Wiltshire and the Gambia exchanging business ideas. 
  • CALL Romanian exchange with the Highlands of Scotland - an exchange of good practice between Romania and Scotland with the intention of building a critical mass of interested parties who can work with the wider community
  • Rural Youth in Europe – Involving the youth in the topic of “Eating, Producing and Deciding: our choice and our voice for the future agriculture in Europe”

Next steps

Applications are now invited for proposals for study tours and exchanges to support the transfer of knowledge and experience of rural development in practice, particularly aimed at supporting such activity in Africa and other developing countries.  Outline proposals and/or applications to help the development stage will be welcome.

The trustees’ next meeting to consider applications will take place in early May, 2015, so those wishing their application to be considered at that meeting should submit them by no later than 15 April 2015.  Applications submitted after that date, unless exceptional circumstances apply, will be deferred until the next trustees’ meeting in September, 2015.

HOW TO APPLY FOR FUNDING

We don’t have an application form, so you are free to formulate your proposal as you wish.  However, when applying for funding, please follow these guidelines:

  • Limit the proposal to approximately 3-5 sides of A4, and send it in by email to Nicola@arkletontrust.co.uk
  • Supply basic information on your organisation – name, address, charitable status (if applicable), annual income and expenditure, sources of funding, website address and contact details.
  • Describe the project or purpose for which you are seeking funding. You must outline how this meets the priorities of the Arkleton Trust as detailed in the call for proposals. Please ensure that the project is clearly identifiable and not something you would ordinarily pay for through core funding.
  • Provide project details such as cost, timescales and activities.
  • Outline the anticipated project outcomes and how these will be assessed, including any post-implementation activities you plan to undertake, and / or wider dissemination of the knowledge gained through the study trip.
  • Please identify any potential / agreed co-funders and what they will fund.

Addis Ababa University Southern & Eastern African Rainwater 2015 An exchange of knowledge and training focusing on the technical design and application of relevant innovative RWH technologies. We expect that practitioners, engineers and project officers or managers will join with the aim to engage in hands-on field based training. All the practical know-how collected will be collated in a set of open-access technical briefs.
Marlborough Brandt Group (MBG) 2014 A proposal for community development in Gunjur The Gambia through young people in Wiltshire and The Gambia exchanging business ideas. Gunjur - The Gambia
Terra 1530 2014 The project wishes to address the lack of citizen’s involvement in the decisional process at the community level by providing training and practical experience in organizing public meetings, local forums and elaborating project sheets, to the NGOs of the Republic of Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine, Bulgaria. This will be realized first by organizing a training session at Craiova for representatives of the NGOs in the Republic of Moldova and secondly by disseminating the results at an international conference in Chisinau where NGOs representatives from the countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine, Bulgaria will also be invited.
MIJARC Europe 2014 The main aim of this proposal is to gather rural young leaders from local, regional and/or national levels from our member movements and other youth organisations dealing with the topic of agriculture, in order to build a common understanding (awareness raising) about the realities of education, practice and advocacy in the field of the agricultural production and food consumption in the different countries in Europe and how rural young people is being taken into account and can influence the decision making processes related to rural development in general and agricultural policies in particular, at national and European levels. Satul Verde 2014 Rural communities in Romania need to become financially self sustainable and less dependent on exterior influences. One way of achieving this is through learning on how to capitalize on local nature, culture, history & people. This exchange was to see if it is possible to maintain the four pillars of sustainability (environmental, cultural, social and economic) by focusing on success stories in Romania and Scottish Highlands.
